Heads Up: 2nd Annual Austin Regional Grilled Cheese Invitational [Food Event]

The Grilled Cheese Invitational started back in ’03 in LA. And while Austin is plenty original enough to come up with its own kooky ideas, this was one worth borrowing. So LA transplants XTC and Sodium decided to throw the first Austin Regional Grilled Cheese Invitational last Spring. It was a cheesy, gooey, sweet and spicy smash of a success.

This year Kraft has hopped on board as a sponsor to make sure there’s more than enough cheese for everyone to fill up. In addition to entries made by the competitors, plenty o' good old-fashioned traditional grilled cheese sandwiches will be flying off the griddle and the cover charge includes indulging in this feast. (You might want to bring your own ketchup.)

Categories include;

The Missionary Position: Standard white bread (no sourdough), orange cheese (Cheddar or American), and standard butter (or margarine).

The Kama Sutra: Any kind of bread, any kind of butter, and any kind of cheese, plus additional ingredients (the interior ingredients must be at least 60% cheese).

The Honey Pot: Any kind of bread, any kind of butter, and any kind of cheese (the interior ingredients of the sammich must be at least 60% cheese), with an overall flavor that is sweet and would best be served as a dessert.

Plus this year, there’s a new category: The Lambada-Quesadilla!

Ms. Caution, one half of last year's top winning team saod, "I came, I cheesed. When we won the whole shebang and a trip to compete in LA, I bawled like a freakin' beauty queen. Yes me, bawling my eyes out over a grilled cheese sandwich."

Pixie Sunshine, Ms. Caution's co-winner reported, "Being a grilled cheese champion has been one of the highlights of my life! I was at a group job interview and they asked me to share something unique about myself. I said, 'I am a grilled cheese champion,' and I got the job!"

In these hard times, maybe you can translate a GCI win into a job, too. But you have to register to compete. Details at the website.
