SXSW Film Preview: It was great, but I was ready to come home

International travel is a pretty stressful endeavor. You don't necessarily speak the language, you are constantly on the defense against swindlers and charlatans, out to bilk you for as much as they can get their hands on, and everything, sometimes literally and figuratively, is foreign. Throw into that mix the emotional powder keg of a recent break-up and you get It was great, but I was ready to come home, a debut feature film by Kris Swanberg, which will be premiering next Monday during SXSW.

Best friends Cam (Jade Healy) and Annie (Swanberg) are backpacking through the lush, tropical land of Costa Rica, no doubt soaking in all the sights and smells and textures that such a thing entails, but all the while one of them is left reeling from lost love. Navigating through the rough waters that come with such an emotional landscape could prove troublesome for the duo, and Swanberg's intention appears to be an exploration of the intricacies of an intimate female friendship.

Swanberg is a member of the tight knit group of filmmakers that have, in the past, focused on a small contingent of late-20s-to-early-30-somethings, dealing with the day-to-day banalities of life. We expect the plot to be sparse, but something about this premise leads us to believe that it will pack a haymaker-of-a-wallop to our admittedly romantic hearts. We've traveled internationally with a dear friend, and amazingly enough, we may have learned more about ourselves during that journey than we will ever know about the countries we inhabited for such a short period of time.
