SXSW Film Preview: Adventureland
Director of 2007's breakout teen hit Superbad, Greg Mottola has tapped into his past to bring you Adventureland. Set in 1987, recent college grad James (The Squid and the Whale's Jesse Eisenberg) takes a dead-end job at his local amusement park, only to find himself, life lessons, and yeah, a lady (Kristin Stewart—that's the lady kissing Robert Pattinson for all you Twilight geeks). Sounds like any ole coming of age story, but, you know, with a theme park and the '80s.
We can't attest for Mottola's writing skills, but any man who's handled the camera for more than a couple of Arrested Development eps is probably pretty capable of capturing some humor. While Eisenberg was decent in The Squid and the Whale, tackling similar existential issues of what to do with one's life, we've always found Stewart to be grating. But we can forgive her existence in this film with the sprinkling of Knocked Up's Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and also Martin Starr—Bill Haverchuck himself—as James' Adventureland cohorts. Throw in a cherry of our guilty-pleasure-man-crush, Ryan Reynolds, and hey, you've got yourself a silly little sundae! We're sold.
If you can't make it to the SXSW screening, see if you can buy a (probably sold out) ticket to the Drafthouse's premiere, where Starr will present the flick.
Adventureland will screen only once during SXSW: Sunday, March 15th at the Alamo South Lamar. For more information, check out the SXSW Film Festival schedule.
