Metallica Confirmed for Stubb's! [SXSW]

The Chronicle's Austin Powell tells Michael Corcoran that Metallica's people were told by Metallica that the band "will indeed be playing Stubb's" during SXSW, as had been previously rumored.

It also appears that folks at SXSW are none too pleased with the leak — Corcoran reports that festival organizer Roland Swenson declared, "[Powell] didn't get it from us ... we were told not to confirm anything and we're sticking by that." Powell, in turn, had let folks at SXSW know of his plan to publish the confirmation but "never heard back."

The only question that remains now is how exactly they're planning to manage the crowd of badge- and wristband-holders plus thousands of hopeful fans who'll likely gather outside the relatively small venue.

I heard they were playing MINUS their front man.

As much as I'd like to jump on the Metallica bashing wagon, I gained a new appreciation of them for taking locals The Sword with them on tour. Even though their new stuff will never, ever rival their old music, I am strangely OK with this.

BTW Robert Rich, that's James with Armani not Kirk.

It would be awesome if they take this opportunity to expose all the attendees to their newest songs and just complete avoid all their old stuff.

  • I would hardly call this the moment that SXSW jumps the shark. It's been fairly corporate for a while now, and I think this is just the final nail in its Starbucks-sponsored coffin. Nonetheless, I'm still excited about the show, should be interesting. I wonder if Kirk will bring his Armani bag?

They had REM at stubs just fine. I'd expect to find far more SXSW attendees at an REM concert than Metallica.

  • Haha! SXSW has officially jumped the shark!
