Similar to real life, the characters in Swanberg's newest film, Alexander the Last, live in a constant state of slight confusion. Artistic Brooklyn newlyweds—played by Jess Weixler (the girl from Teeth) and Justin Rice (the guy from Bishop Allen)—are young, adorable and talented, thus they seem surprised to find out that marriage is, umm, kind of challenging. Jobs that separate them (she is an actress in a play, he is a touring musician) as well as sexual temptations, insecurity and a freakishly-tight sisterly bond provide the fodder for the kinds of halting conversations and lingering close-ups this movie movement is known for.
Not that Swanberg is a newcomer—his previous films include Hannah Takes the Stairs, Kissing on the Mouth and LOL—but this indie is given extra credibility by producer Noah Baumbach and always-excellent supporting actress Jane Adams. Alexander the Last will compete in the Narrative Feature category at SXSW with three showings altogether.
One more interesting tidbit about this film - it will premiere at the Paramount on Saturday and simultaneously through IFC Festival Direct’s OnDemand service. So, whether you’ll be out and about at this year’s festival or navel-gazing within the safety of your apartment as all the SXSW madness goes down, this small-scale study of human interaction will be available for your viewing pleasure.
Alexander the Last will have its World Premiere Saturday, March 14th at the Paramount. For more information, check out the SXSW Film Festival schedule.
