SXSW Film Preview: Sorry, Thanks

When life just isn’t working out very well, it’s a good idea to stop and ask a tough but important question: “Am I a jerk?” Sure, it’s easier to blame our problems on other people (or the blind cruelty of the universe), but if it’s self-actualization we seek—or a relationship that lasts longer than three months—it may be time for a little painful introspection.

This is the task Max (Austin’s own Wiley Wiggins) struggles with as he clumsily navigates through a life that involves caring about his girlfriend, Sara (Ia Hernandez) while pining for Kira (Kenya Miles), a newly single woman struggling to climb a career ladder she isn’t sure she gives a rat’s bum about. Max’s best friend Mason (Andrew Bujalski) helps Max along the twisted path to self-discovery with unsparing insight, and a subplot involving a cat adoption sheds further funny light on the morality of modern life.

Sorry, Thanks was shot entirely in San Francisco’s Mission District and features a cast of largely unknown actors. This is director Dia Sokol’s feature debut, and the film will compete in the 2009 SXSW Narrative Feature category. We’re excited to see what (Mitch Kramer) Wiggins is up to these days, and highly doubt he ends up being very much of a jerk.

Sorry, Thanks will have its World Premiere Saturday, March 14th, at the Alamo Ritz. For more information, check out the SXSW Film Festival schedule.
