Matt & Kim Charm the Cut Copy Crowd

Let's face it. Cut Copy is kind of the sh*t right now. Their intoxicating electronic dance beats lured a broad spectrum of fans Friday night, making Stubb's one of few places on Red River to see straight men wearing sweatbands and eye glitter. Cut Copy realize their opening acts need to be strong to impress their cult-like followers and made a wise selection with Brooklyn duo Matt & Kim for this tour.

The husband/wife team set the tone for a transcendental dance party with apparent chemistry and passion bursting from their instruments. Utter bliss is the only way to describe the look on Kim's face as she pounded out mad drum beats to back up Matt's delicate voice and stair-stepping piano riffs. Stealing glances at each other and ferociously head bobbing throughout the set, the punk dance outfit made Stubb's feel like a much more intimate venue than it really is. Matt stood on his chair throughout the performance, and even though he claimed to have fallen the last time he attempted this perilous act, the crowd was irrevocably hyped-up afterward. It's easy to tell that these two got into music not for popularity, but for the genuine love of sharing their talents and happiness with others.

The set list was short and included favorites like "Daylight" and "Yea Yeah," making it easy to chant along. Matt & Kim spent a lot of time layering studio elements into their latest album, Grand, which unfortunately were lost during the live performance, but the energy and charm make that possible to overlook. Modest yet confident, Matt & Kim triumphantly succeeded as a sustainable opening act for a sea of glow-stick bearing fans.

Had to miss this show, but can't wait to see them at Opals for SX.

Thats my main complaint about the Cut Copy show, which was Matt and Kim didnt play long enough(its like they were rushed off stage). I think DJ Knightlife played for like an hour and half or something. In my opinion, some of that time could have been given to M&K. Like the other dudes comment, maybe Ill see'em at SXSW.
