In case you missed Kool Keith’s otherworldly performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest last year, the guys at Transmission are giving you yet another chance to view the hip-hop enigma. He’s playing Thursday at the Mohawk outside. He goes by several MC personas, Black Elvis, Dr. Octagon and Dr. Dooom, and for this performance the far-out hip-hop visionary will pit two of these personalities (Dooom and Octagon) against one another. You might remember Keith from his days in the Ultramagnetic MC’s or for his albums Dr. Octagonecologyst and Black Elvis/Lost in Space. The production on the former was helmed by Dan the Automator, who later went on to become engaged in another ambitious and quirky hip hop project called Handsome Boy Modeling School. Keith has remained prolific throughout his career which began in the mid-90s, and his latest release, Tashan Dorrsett, arrived just last month. He’s remained experimental throughout, and his flow is often complemented with themes focusing on space, fantasy, sexuality, environmental concerns and eccentric abstractness.
The Paramedic Fetus from the East will also be performing, and DJ Jester the Filipino Fist will be spinning inside in the wee hours to cap off the evening.
