One of the more talked about films from last year's SXSW, Beautiful Losers, is coming back to town for a few screenings at the Drafthouse. The documentary follows director Aaron Rose and his artistic cohorts, who have in large part defined the world of American street art and continue to make significant contributions to contemporary pop art. Rose founded Alleged Gallery in New York in the early 1990's and helped to establish legitimacy for the DIY ethos with art that was highly influenced by graffiti, hip hop, punk rock, and skateboarding. Artists profiled in the film include Barry McGee, Ed Templeton, Geoff McFetridge, Margaret Killgallen, and Shepard Fairey.

Beautiful Losers goes beyond simply documenting a subculture and focuses on the personal stories and struggles of the artists and their creative processes. Nearly twenty years after they unintentionally started a significant cultural movement, many of the artists grapple to find balance in a world where what was once counterculture is now mainstream. Rose and his crew of filmmakers combine candid interviews with stock footage to tell an inspiring story about the power of creativity that is able to motivate audiences regardless of their familiarity with the world of street art.

Beautiful Losers is screening on Sunday, March 8th at 10pm, and Monday March 9th at 7:35pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz. Tickets are on sale now. Director Aaron Rose and Producer Tobin Yelland will be at the screenings for Q&A sessions. Rose and Yelland will also be the guest speakers at the Austin School of Film's Artist Salon and Screening on Sunday, March 8th.
