Today, the husband and wife design team of Charles and Ray Eames are perhaps most well known for their many contributions to the world of furniture design, but the dynamic couple created much more than their iconic lounger and molded plywood chairs. Ray and Charles significantly influenced the world of industrial design, photography, architecture, graphic design, and even film. On Thursday, the Austin chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, or AIGA, will be showing a selection of the films of Charles and Ray Eames at Domy Books. The event kicks off Reel Design, a "film series for the design-conscious" sponsored by AIGA Austin.

The Eameses made nearly one hundred short films addressing a wide range of topics, including visual descriptions of scientific and mathematical concepts, pieces starting historical figures, and many films that featured the couple's own design work. These shorts may already be familiar to some audiences, as select Eames films are often played before the features at the Drafthouse.

Domy Books and AIGA Ausitin will be screening approximately two hours worth of the Eameses' impressive body of work. The screening is a fitting companion for the new Midcentury-Modern exhibit, Birth of the Cool, that is currently on view at The Blanton. Thursday's film screening beings at 7:30pm and proceeds from the $5 suggested donation go to the Austin chapter of the AIGA.
