Weekend Music Preview: Misprint Magazine’s 3rd Annual Beard & Moustache Competition [Friday @ The Mohawk]

Misprint Magazine has kept us chuckling for many a year now and its novel ideas and columns never cease to amaze -- just the other day we caught wind of Misprint’s newest project -- the somewhat disturbing End Live Music campaign! This Friday, the beloved local publication presents the latest installment of its Beard & Moustache Competition at The Mohawk. Doors open at 9 p.m.; register by 9:45 to compete in various categories such as Best Groomed, Fiercest Chops, Ladies!, Freestyle, Sweetest Moustache, and Gnarliest Beard. A live performance by Cavedweller and DJ sets by DJ Andy (the Mouth) and DJ Huge Cock are also a part of the scheduled entertainment. We caught up with one of Misprint’s head honchos Bryan Keplesky this week for a preview of what to expect on Friday.

Give us a brief timeline of the history of Misprint Magazine.

Bryan Keplesky: Misprint Magazine first came into the world in May of 2005. I think we printed 500 black and white copies and it was 16 pages. A mere 4 years later we've doubled the page count (it's all ads now!) and we print in shiny brown ink. We had our first issue release party in November 2005. I also made you a chart. Over that time we've covered a variety of topics, including eastside gentrification (way back in 2005), the smoking ban, guns, the history of Texas, our eventual robot enslavement, and drinking. I'm most proud of the $7 challenge and our parenting guides.

Misprint's mission has not changed over time. It is our goal to bring predictably ironic content that has absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever. And to waste as much off-white paper as possible. Misprint is currently made by Bryan Keplesky and Anthony Moschella.

How many Beard & Moustache Competitions has Misprint Magazine held since 2005?

This will be our 3rd Beard and Moustache Competition. All the key players remain, including our host Matt Bearden and DJ Andy (the Mouth). This year we're taking over The Mohawk. Each competition seems to draw more and more people, and I think it's because dudes here are finally tired of appearing emasculated and waifish. A beard contest is a great way to celebrate the underappreciated art of facial hair and bring together tons of dudes for responsible social drinking.

How did you decide on Cavedweller as the performing artist for this edition of the competition?

Cavedweller rules because the dude literally lives in a cave in north Austin and has a giant beard. DJ Andy the Mouth will be on the big stage and the mysterious DJ Huge Cock will be on the inside stage.

What other additional fun activities can patrons expect this Friday?

There's definitely going to be some drink specials. Alison Narro is doing beard portraits. Beard Team Austin will be there hyping up their planned trip to Alaska this May for the World Beard and Moustache Championship. And international beard celebrity Phil Olsen, who is basically the Béla Károlyi of Beard Team USA, is also flying in from Tahoe to hang out.

Lastly, Misprint recently launched an "End Live Music" campaign -- can you tell us more about that?

Right now it's in beta. I don't want to give too much away, but it has a lot to do with electing officials in this town, at all levels of the governmental infrastructure, who can help spearhead the Misprint agenda of making Austin the Recorded Music Capitol of the World.
