SXSW Music Updates: All The Bands You Can Handle

  • Austin label End Sounds has put together a big party to kick off SX music. On Tuesday, 3/17, Red 7 will host Madball, Death In The Park, Reign Supreme, Mike Herrera's Tumbledown, Call To Preserve, True Widow, Bitter End, The Escape Frame, and an ad hoc Minor Threat cover band featuring Zach Blair, Luke Abbey, Frank Carter, and Sam Ghanbar. The show is open to the public and cover is $10.
  • Meanwhile, on the hip-hop side of the SXSW bill, the Austin Music Hall will host an all-star lineup to finish off SX '09. Saturday's roster now hosts Dead Prez, Rick Ross, Bun B, B.o.B, Kidz In The Hall, Killer Mike, Al Kapone, and Bazaar Royale. There will also be a Thursday showcase featuring Outkast's Big Boi and K'Naan.
  • NPR has continued to flesh out their plans for SX showcases: newly confirmed openers for The Decemberists at Stubb's on 3/18 are The Avett Brothers (who are plugging a new record produced by Rick Rubin) and the increasingly popular Heartless Bastards. NPR has also announced their day show lineup for the Parish - which is significant given that last year, they wrangled Vampire Weekend, Bon Iver, Shout Out Louds, Yeasayer, and AA Bondy on to one stage. This year's roster has Blind Pilot, BLK JKS, K'Naan, Dirty Projectors, Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Downs, and our personal favorite - Blitzen Trapper.
  • A perennial favorite for alt.country lovers, the Bloodshot Records party at Yard Dog now has a final roster. Confirmed guests include Waco Brothers w/ Rosie Flores, Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Justin Townes Earle, Meat Purveyors, Deadstring Brothers, Ha Ha Tonka, Exene Cervenka, and Dex Romweber Duo.
  • In the winner of this year's "show with an absurdly long line that will frustrate all who try to attend it" award, Stubb's will host a bill on 3/19 with Ben Harper, Meat Puppets, Gomez, Andrew Bird, and, well, Katy Perry and 3 oh!3.
  • And in case you've missed it elsewhere, a pair of 90's alt.rock heroes have been added: Tori Amos and PJ Harvey (along with John Parish) will each be performing new material at SXSW showcases.
  • One final day show note: Force Field PR and TerrorBird Media have put together a solid lineup for their party on Wednesday 3/18: Vivian Girls, Beach House, The Thermals, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Max Tundra, Wavves, Fol Chen, and Loney, Dear are all scheduled to perform.
