Le Diamant Brut SXSW Edition: Red Fang & Belleville Outfit

BELLEVILLE OUTFIT

What’s the Deal: The Austin group does well to mix Americana with an older big band style. A toe-tapping, swinging song or two is sometimes all you need to chase the blues away, and this Outfit is quite capable of supplying just that. They swirl the sounds of gypsy, roots music, country, jazz and the music of New Orleans, to name a few. They’ve shared stages with Junior Brown, the Del McCoury Band and Ricky Skaggs (that’s a healthy portion of bluegrass). And, they just popped out with their debut, Wanderin’, only a year ago.

“Caroline”, the second track off their debut, is a song straight out of the Django era, which is more than just coincidence seeing as though “Belleville” is a Django Reinhardt song. “Caroline” is a swinging, dancing ditty with piano, guitar, violin and bass all in full effect.

Something Interesting: They got their start in the small town of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and for those who have never been, it’s a wonder they ever made it out of the black hole that it is. They will be on display at this year’s SXSW.

Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “Wanderin’” and “Somebody Like You”

RED FANG

What’s the Deal: Red Fang will be sludging up the music of this year’s South by Southwest with their gargantuan distorted guitars that squeal and hit like a sledge, a rock-solid rhythm section, gritted-up vocals and an overall sound that hits hard and drives fast… real fast. They’ve played with The Sword and The Fucking Champs, to name a few, and their brand of thick, melodic metal-meets-Stoner rock mischief is ensnaring.

“Prehistoric Dog” is one of the more instantly gratifying tracks by the band. Unyielding, guitar pumps and whales move the song along into brutal territory, and the vocals are powerful but still comprehensible, which is a pleasure when the band in question is singing about outer space, spells and beasts of hell.

Something Interesting: They made a video for “Prehistoric Dog” that is really worthwhile. It has the guys, in all their big hairy bliss, fighting a group of LARPers while clad in beer armor. Not to spoil it for you, but they lose in the end. The role players go to their trunks and pull out real weapons to dispatch our would-be heroes.

Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “Good to Die” and “Reverse Thunder”
