Valentine’s Day weekend means plenty of roses, stuffed bears, heart-shaped confections and whatever else the greeting card industry and candy companies come up with to appeal to tender, romantic tendencies of the average American. It’s also the perfect time to take in some sonic sentiment, making the Annuals show at The Parish on Friday a better place than most to flex your love muscle (the other one). Annuals are a North Carolina-based sextet of fresh-faced, melody-maddened sweetened pop makers. The music shimmers and shines bathed in layers of chorus, piano, twinkling guitar and percussion. Their live shows contain a lot of energy, and they’re no stranger to blog attention for it as well as for their sometimes symphonically grandiose sound. They released their debut full-length in 2006, and The Annuals’ latest is Such Fun, which was birthed just last year. If you don’t get enough of their harmonious merrymaking on Friday, they’ll be revisiting the town that music built during South by.
Singer/Songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield is stopping by KUT for a little air time on V-Day following her performance on Friday to drop some gentle folk tunes on listeners around Austin. Then, it’s off to spend the latter half of the month of April providing tour support for Ray LaMontange. What Laura Says will also be on the bill to bring some ramblin’ Tempe rootsy rock to both the heartsick and the romantically quenched.
