What a beautiful story. I broke out into a full blown sob at work while reading your touching tribute to Satch. Just the other day I was pondering what my reaction will be when I'm faced with this same situation. I have a hard time feeling any thing less than angry about what a short time we get to spend with these creatures that show us such unconditional love and respect (there is no other connection on earth like it). I guess the love they give us is just so pure and good that it can only come in short bursts of life, like the distant stars in the universe that shine so bright and hard that they soon burn out.

Spike. I recently went through the same thing with my boy. Arthritis did him in too - when I first noticed it, I would say in a sing-song way "who put those old bones in my baby?".
Inevitably I got to that last step. It still hurts and I still think of him (and all my dogs) frequently since they are the ones that unconditionally love.
He was a pain in the ass that every one thought was too aggro, too crazy but he loved me devoutly and selfishly. And he was handsome. And hilarious. And he could read me. What else could you want.

Isn't it unfair how their lives are so brief? Good luck and take care. Give Satch an extra belly rub from me.

Thank you for sharing this, Spike. I suspect it will be the most touching and genuine sentiment I experience this Valentine's Day.
