Advance Giveaway: Lucinda Williams [Feb. 20 @ La Zona Rosa]

Lucinda Williams and her big broken heart return to Austin next week as she kicks off her 2009 touring. A benchmark live performer, Williams never shies from the spare, sullen lullabies that made her an icon. She often dives into a devastating piece like “Ventura” in the first few songs, something few of her contemporaries would do (though few, if any, could write that song in the first place).

Simultaneously, she buoys her sets with growling up-tempo numbers and barbwire guitar lines, which stop shows from devolving into Kleenex conventions. Her most recent work, Little Honey, is ripe for the road, as it sees these Williams hallmarks return to their pre-West strength.
