Weekend Music Preview: Johnny Goudie and the Little Champions CD Release @ Stubb's

Long time residents of Austin must get a tad nostalgic when they hear the name Johnny Goudie. The versatile musician has been earning his keep in the Live Music Capital for many a year. After stints with a few bands in Houston (Panjadrum, Lovetree, as well as some solo outings), Goudie relocated to Austin and pursued a number of projects, including Mr. Rocket Baby. By 1997, Goudie had turned his attention to his new band, the eponymous Goudie. Goudie the band gained prominence with 2000’s Peep Show release on Lars Ulrich’s The Music Company label (under the Elektra Records umbrella). Stirring guitar-rock marked by glossy production and Goudie’s crisp vocal delivery ensured a sonically impressive record and earned the band tours with the likes of Supergrass and Blur. Goudie disbanded after the release of 2002’s …Effects of Madness on local label India Records.

Since then Goudie has continued his prolific ways, releasing solo material and also working with a number of musicians in town in various capacities, sometimes as a supporting musician, occasionally as producer. Currently, Goudie plies his trade with an all-star band of sorts, the Little Champions which includes members of Austin bands Canvas and a+machines. Johnny Goudie and the Little Champions play Stubb’s (Inside) tonight in support of their debut record El Payaso, which was released this past Tuesday; Suzanna Choffel opens.
