Putting A Leash On Auditorium Shores
As part of Town Lake's next phase of development, Austin's Parks and Recreation Department is looking for community input as it prepares to make improvements to the area of Town Lake that includes Auditorium Shores. One suggestion that has already gotten a lot of attention is to end the leash-free zone that has made the park such a popular destination for local canines and their adult companions.
While we here at Austinist aren't fans of unruly dogs or irresponsible owners that don't scoop the poop, putting leashes on dogs at Auditorium Shores is unlikely to solve either of those problems. To quote the Dog Whisperer -- a dog owner must use "exercise, discipline and affection" to train dogs. Not providing a convenient, centrally located place for dogs to actually be dogs is only going to create a lot unhappy dogs and even unhappier owners.
According to Stuart Strong, acting director of the Austin Parks and Recreation, the department has already received feedback from people on both sides of the leash issue but it will be holding an upcoming meeting later this month to discuss this and other concerns facing Auditorium Shores improvements. Once the department has a sense for the public's stance on the issue, it will present the final plan to the City Council for approval.
If you'd like to voice your opinion on this issue, the meeting will take place on Thursday, February 19th at 6PM in the Town Lake Center assembly room, located at 721 Barton Springs Road.
