Although the Blanton's anticipated upcoming exhibit Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture, won't be on display until later this month, Friday's B scene provides an opportunity to check out some neat exhibits that will be closing soon. Over in the museum's WorkSpace gallery, a contemporary Argentinian artist, Marcelo Pombo, has installed Ornaments in the Landscape, and the Museum as a Hotel Room. The show combines Pombo's graphic, large-scale paintings (created with industrial paint and sparkling polishes) with pieces of hotel room furniture. Ornaments in the Landscape will be on view at the Blanton through February 22nd.
Alternate Worlds: The Visionary Artist in Texas will be on display in the Modern and Contemporary Prints and Drawings gallery. The show celebrates folk artist, Rev. Johnnie Swearingen, and includes his work as well as pieces by other outsider artists from the Lone Star State. Much of Swearingen's work relfects his experiences as a black preacher and his paintings vividly depict Biblical scenes, illustrations from fables, and slices of life from rural Texas. Alternate Worlds runs through March 8th.
The museum also recently acquired a major installation piece that will be hard for B scene attendees to miss. Contemporary sculptor Teresita Fernandez designed and installed 3,100 square feet of acrylic panels that cover the museum's atrium. The site-specific piece, Stacked Waters, uses saturated shades of blue and the museum's natural lighting to resemble water.
Tickets to B scene are available online or at the museum. Tickets cost $5 for museum members and $10 for the general public.
