The Submarines and The Morning Benders at Stubb's

Here goes 101X, blowing our hair back again. Jeez, guys. Can we have one week where you don't sponsor some great show? Tonight, they've scheduled yet another PBR-can-rattling concert to make sure Austin stays calibrated within the width of a high string to the coolest music floating through this town of keyed up rock'n'rollas.

Tonight, deep in the smoky bowels of Stubb's, you will witness not one, but two great acts stopping in from the giant middle finger to the rest of the world that is California. Los Angeles' The Submarines-recently featured on an iPhone 3G ad, apparently-are a very attractive duo, who sound a bit like The Raveonettes' distant American cousins with the reverb turned down for chrissakes, or perhaps just a less incendiarily precious Mates of State who aren't pathologically drawn to harmonizing in thirds, no matter what. Headlining the night is Oakland's The Morning Benders whose Myspace is Diesels-on-fire-lying when it simply describes them as "Pop." They're so much more than that. A band who can shift between sounding like a Beatles bedroom demo to doing a sterling send-up of a prom band from 2245 A.D. can't be pigeon-holed.

Attend the brou-ha-ha this evening and invent some new adjectives on us! Fill in the blanks, please.
