Sustainable Narratives at Big Red Sun [Art Preview]

Landscape designer, nursery, and gift store, Big Red Sun, has recently held a few art exhibits at their chic East side shop. They hosted an East Austin Studio Tour party last fall and are currently exhibiting a design show that kicks off tonight. The exhibit, Sustainable Narratives, celebrates "the pursuit of integrity and beauty in the everyday object" and features work by local designers and artists. Sustainable Narratives will include funky furniture pieces, modern architectural accessories, and contemporary photography and video art.

MINIMIS, a local architectural product firm, will be showing their products at tonight's opening reception. The company designs and creates sustainable modern home and commercial elements including steel countertops, interior doors, and modular LED walkways (perfect for all your mobile catwalk needs). MINIMIS has has also made sidewalk planters out of salvaged filing cabinets that are then decorated by street artists including local stencil artist Fe De Rico and tagger Sloke.

Austin design studio VeroKolt will be showing some of their furniture. Head designer Veronica Koltuniak takes vintage home furnishing pieces and remixes them with modern elements. VeroKolt's quirky twists on traditional design include pieces like the "Avocado Land Rocket" couch and "Read All Over," a chaise-lounger upholstered in newsprint fabric. As a part of Sustainable Narratives, video artist and photographer, Denise Prince, will be screening her latest work entitled "Beck Video". Prince helped work on the public art installation "Celebrity Topiary" that was commissioned by Art Alliance Austin last year.

Stop by Big Red Sun's retail store tonight to meet the artists, peruse locally produced modern design, and celebrate the opening of Sustainable Narratives.

Sustainable Narratives will be on display through the month of February at Big Red Sun.
