The UT Performing Arts Center’s Bass Concert Hall is back in business after undergoing renovations over the last year and a half. BCH hosted John Legend last Friday and is home to two stellar events this weekend. On Saturday, Broken Social Scene brings its mesmerizing compositions to the remodeled venue but not before a very special evening entitled World of Sound this Friday.

Presented by The Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music & the Performing Arts Center, World of Sound is just one of many shows curated by the UTPAC at six theatres around campus, in accordance with its mantra of “Bringing the world to Austin.” Friday’s concert features performances by The University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Choruses, and Jazz Trio, with contributions from many notable luminaries such as Samuel Ramey (bass-baritone), Frederica Von Stade (mezzo-soprano), and Barbara Conrad (mezzo-soprano). A pre-performance lecture by Professor Robert DeSimone, Professor of Music at UT’s College of Fine Arts (and Director of the Butler School of Music), kicks things off at 7 p.m. Local duo Ghostland Observatory will deliver an encore performance at the end of the night.

As for the main course, attendees can expect inspirational renditions of “Song of Democracy” by Howard Hanson and New Morning for the World “Daybreak of Freedom” by Joseph Schwantner, along with The Beatles’ “Blackbird.” You can stream all the glory via the Butler School of Music site. Ticket prices start at $22 for students and faculty and $26 for non-students.
