Guide to Inauguration Events in Austin

If you want a head start on planning your Inauguration Week activities, here's a brief guide to some events happening around town. Just like with election night, most bars and restaurants in Austin will be hosting some sort of special event — and yes, there will probably be dancing in the streets. You can also see more informal gatherings on MoveOn's calendar.


Saturday

  • ActBlue's Travis County Inauguration Gala] kicks off a week of festivities with a fancy ball at the Driskill Hotel. All proceeds from this party, featuring Grupo Fantasma, will go to the Travis County Democratic Party (TX). Tickets are $100 apiece and still available online. Cocktail/Semi-Formal Attire


Tuesday

  • "Bush Retirement Party & President Barack Obama Inauguration Celebration" at Antone's, with entertainment by the Heartless Bastards, Guy Forsyth, Representative Jim Dunnam & The Bad Precedents, and Special Guest Hayes Carll. Advance tickets are $20 person, $25 at the door. Proceeds benefit TX Democrats.
  • "Party For the People" at 501 Studios. Hosted by DJ Mel, with Prince Klassen, DJ Starsign, Daetron Vegas, and Austin Poetry Slam All-Stars. Complimentary Red Stripe. RSVP by emailing partyforthepeople@djmel.com. 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., 21+.

  • "Obamarama!" at The Mohawk, a 'soul shakedown inauguration dance' party featuring DJs The MATADOR and The PopNoir Soundsystem
  • The Texas Presidential Inaugural Celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel. Hosted by Judy Maggio (KEYE-TV), dinner and live music included. 6:30 p.m. to Midnight, tickets $80. "Texas Glam"/Black Tie Optional
  • Inaugural Bash at Dog and Duck Pub. No cost, informal gathering. "Bring noise makers, party hats, horns, whistles, etc."
  • Inaugural Bash at El Mercado. No cost, informal gathering. "Come welcome in our new president over some Mexican Martinis because the time has come for Bush to vamonos and for us to Obamanos!"
  • Inauguration Party at Opal Divine's. Hawaiian themed appetizers, drinks, and the 'Gobama-rita'
  • Art opening of "The Road to Hope": A photographic glimpse of African American Life 1850-1960 at New East Arts Gallery. Free
