SXSW has announced that BMI's showcase on Friday, March 20 will be headlined by none other than the new wave sires, DEVO. The show on Friday at the Austin Music Hall marks the band's first SXSW performance, and they'll return downtown on Saturday for an interview at the Austin Convention Center as part of the SXSW Music Conference.
Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale founded the band in Ohio way back in 1973. "Devo" became the band's name thanks to Casale and Mothersbaugh's insatiable interest in what they call "devolution," the idea that instead of evolving, mankind has actually regressed. They site growing herd mentality and social decomposition as alerts to the trend. Musically, they've covered the compositional map, using pieces of punk, new wave and dance interchangeably, tirelessly weaving deadpan humor and wry social commentary together. Though best known for their 1980 hit "Whip It" DEVO is without a doubt one of the most influential groups still together, having slimmed the line between avant and pop to nearly nil.
