San Diego's Donkeys give us the impression that they are much weirder than their band's prosaic name or their subtly executed arrangements suggest. Curiously forward nudge-and-a-wink lyrics, gangly Jonathan Richman guitars, and a fat Fender Rhodes hefted onstage for good measure all conspire to competently deliver some of the most easygoing couchsurf-indie you'll hear this semester.
Tonight at the Mohawk they'll be preceded by Deleted Scenes who, conversely, wear their beautiful strange on their sleeves, still gorgeously restrained. Do yourself a favor and read their hilarious bio. Maybe we're huffing too much potpourri spray, but we hear a lot of The Shins in these dudes' faraway hollered pop nugs. Hell, go glean your own spurious comparisons. While you're out there, pick up a copy of their freakishly new album, Birdseed Shirt, already making waves at our sister site. Also, get in the door early to catch Austin's precious Crooks, a spaghetti western of a group served covered in salsa instead of marinara. All things said and done, anyone who misses this show risks being called a lazy schmuck with bad taste in music by everyone whose opinions ever mattered to them. Do you really want to start your year off with that kind of embarrassing condemnation?
