Weekend Music Preview: Free Week featuring Dans la Lune & much, much more!

Free Week wraps up this weekend but not before another onslaught of amazing acts playing live at various venues on Red River St. for $0 -- if you’re over 21 that is. The youngsters can enjoy all the music for a measly $5. The Mohawk had an unending line last Friday and Saturday and there’s no reason to not expect more of the same this weekend. On Friday, the venue hosts a legit pop-fest featuring some of Austin’s finest melody makers. Retro flavor from Dans la Lune and The Ugly Beats outside, and the talented trio of The Laughing, Moth!Fight!, and Golden Bear inside make this a must for anyone craving a bit of local magic. (Golden Bear and The Laughing also put in shifts at Clementine Coffee Bar’s third birthday celebration earlier on Friday, at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.)

We’ve been especially enamored with Dans la Lune’s catchy pop ditties of late - we chatted with them this week to check up on their origin, influences, and Lucy the Poodle Productions -- read our interview after the jump.

If you’d rather not allow your ears to be at the mercy of all those melodies that will surely get stuck in your head, make the short walk over to Club de Ville for Cry Blood Apache’s bludgeoning experimentation. The band released the impressive Northern Travelers EP last year (our review) but since it clocked in at under twelve minutes, we’re eagerly awaiting more recordings, or a full-length even. CBA gets things going at this gig with The Weird Weeds following and La Snacks headlining. The Weird Weeds released I Miss This last March and made The Austin Chronicle cover in May; La Snacks dropped Newfangled in November and will peddle the EP’s wares at an official showcase at SXSW this year, followed by an east coast tour in April and May.

Also on Friday, Emo’s, which had its own long lines outside this past weekend to contend with, brings us Attack (In)Formation and Bee vs. Moth inside, and The Strange Boys and The Teeners inside. The Vitamins (inside) and Lions of Tsavo (outside) at Red 7, and Flash Boys at Beerland round off Friday’s choice freebies.

Follow the jump for our Free Week picks for Saturday, and our interview with Dans la Lune.

We’re spoilt for choice on Saturday as well -- Emo’s has quite the line-up on both its stages -- Those Peabodys, Shapes Have Fangs, and Wine and Revolution are just three of the talented acts on the schedule inside while the outside stage line-up this evening includes The Black, Cry Blood Apache, and Corto Maltese.

Shapes Have Fangs are also scheduled to perform at Club de Ville on Saturday, along with Cavedweller. The Mohawk offers up Brazos, Frank Smith, The Lovely Sparrows outside; Transmography will be on hand to furnish the inside bar with its innovative concoctions. The duo is set to release a split 12" with The Snake Trap on Australian Cattle God Records next month.

Sons Of Hercules at Beerland, and Crash Gallery (inside) and Lower Class Brats (outside) at Red 7 offer further Saturday Free Week options.

Now, as promised, our interview with Dans la Lune:

Dans la Lune was one of our favorite new bands in 2008 -- when did you guys get together?

Dans La Lune: Three out of the five members hail from Corpus Christi, TX. Bassist Gary Delgado and vocalist Johnny Flores were childhood friends and had played music together for several years. We were acquainted with drummer Daniel Hinojosa through Little League Baseball but didn't become close friends with him until we all ended up in Austin around 2003. We began playing with guitarists Chazz Bessette (from Tacoma, WA) and Aaron Mason (from Atlanta, GA) in early 2008 and have been doing shows as Dans la Lune ever since.

We hear a lot of 60's influences in your music -- what were some of your favorite bands growing up, and what are your listening to these days?

There's no doubt that the band is heavily influenced by music of the 1960's such as The Turtles, The Who, The Beatles, The Sonics, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, and too many others to mention. We aren't really moved by much on the radio these days but we like The Black Keys, Dungen, The Raconteurs, Of Montreal, The Strokes, The Shins, The Hives, and The Black Angels to name a few.

Dans la Lune seems to be a part of a retro-pop movement in Austin -- would you define it as such? What are your thoughts on the various "retro" and "garage" pop bands in town -- any favorites? Do you guys aim to portray a certain fashion ethic?

We don't want to be defined by the movement, we formed the band because we love to play, write, and perform. We just want people to come, dance and have fun. However, we do agree that there's definitely something going on around here. You can feel the energy, excitement, and camaraderie between the local show-goers and all of the new acts that have recently popped up. We like a retro sound with a modern twist and have enjoyed sharing the stage with other local rockers who feel the same such as The Ugly Beats, The Jungle Rockers, The Strange Boys, Wine and Revolution, and Hacienda, just to name a few. As far as fashion goes, is thrift store chic a category?

What is Lucy the Poodle Productions and how did you get involved with that?

Lucy the Poodle Productions was formed earlier this year by members of Southern Drama, DawnStarArt, Dans la Lune, and Death is not a joyride. Their creative vision was to provide a platform and support system for artists of all types to showcase their work. One of LTP's goals is to support the handful of bands that they feel passionately about and help out with things like promotion, art, photography, booking, etc. They are rapidly becoming known for their infamous themed parties which incorporate music, art, dance, theatre, costuming, and audience interaction. These events are an all out, over the top experience to say the least, and Dans la Lune has gotten to participate in some really fun shows.

Lastly, what plans for a full-length?

Right now we are searching for the right studio and making preparations for our first release. We've been lucky enough to have the opportunity to work on pre-production with musician and producer Oscar Houchins who performed in the 1960's with groups like Tommy James, The Shondells, and The Clique, and has worked with musicians such as Loretta Lynn and Wilco. We hope to have something special to offer soon.

Thank you for speaking with Austinist!

What? No mention of the Distant Seconds CD release @ Trophys tonight. A crying shame.

Guess that makes them the Distant 50ths, or something....
