Preview: Emo's Last Night of Free Week

As we reflect on the fortune of free shows we've had this week, it’s with bittersweet symphony (bum bum bum, bum bum bum) that we part ways with Free Week. We are eternally grateful for the massive supply of great music and an excuse to party for seven days straight while never once worrying about having the cash for cover. But alas, there’s still a bit more to see! Saturday night includes many promising acts, but we especially recommend the lineup at Emo’s: DJ Remy Mac, The Black, International Waters and The Minotaurs.

International Waters, an Austin entourage, shell out beachy vibrations with tender verses that echo those of the Kings of Convenience. Even though the overall sound is pretty mellow, their track “In the Park” is still deserving of a shimmy and a shake.

The Black (no, not The Blacks or The Black Kids or the thirty billion other bands with “Black” in the title) are another Austin original that flaunt bluesy folk rock so much that it borders the line of country music. The straightforward bass line is nestled behind racy guitar licks similar to those of Johnny Cash or Buddy Holly. The group manages to put an indie twist on classic rhythms blasted out with plenty of harmonica.

To make the feast complete, DJ Remy Mac and The Minotaurs will join the stage. DJ Remy Mac is better known as Ramesh Srivastava, the frontman for indie pop pleasure Voxtrot. We hear he’ll be sandwiching some DJing in between sets. The Minotaurs are the invention of former Sound Team member Matt Oliver. To date, they’ve remained relatively low on the radar so we’re anxious to see what they’re all about. It’s sure to be a night to remember, after which we’ll be patiently waiting for next year’s rendition of Free Week.
