Flash Mob Austin's Next Caper is a Massive Freeze Downtown

The admins behind Flash Mob Austin informed us that their next escapade will be a massive coordinated 'freeze' at a TBA location downtown at the end of this month. Anyone interested in participating can simply show up at Republic Square Park before 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31 for the pre-mob briefing session. They'll announce the location and synchronize watches then.

FMA is hoping to pull off something like this:

Since their official inception last year, our local Flash Mobbers have successfully engaged in half a dozen creative hi-jinks, from Operation Pillow Fiiiiiight to Thrill the World Austin. This next one's a little less involved, and certainly won't require nearly as much makeup as the MJ dance-off. Details, re-posted from their blog, after the jump.

We are announcing this so far in advance so that you are able to save the date, clear your schedule, spread the word, and invite absolutely everyone you know. We'd like to see close to 100 agents come out. We know this is possible because we once gathered 100 people together for a pillow fight and 881 people together to dance to Thriller.

There will be a REQUIRED briefing session at 11:00 a.m. on the morning of the mission. Bundle up because we'll be meeting at Republic Square Park (5th & San Antonio). This meeting is required in order to announce the location, sync watches, and to troubleshoot. We will then walk and/ or carpool to our freeze location from there (don't worry, it's seven blocks away, which equates to only .7 miles).

At 12:30 p.m., there will be a wrap up meeting at the same spot to record agents' reactions, talk about how it went, etc. This wrap-up meeting is encouraged, but NOT required. But to coerce you, there will be hot coffee and homemade cookies there. Yum...

I agree. Announcing this thing kinda defeats the purpose.

Flash Mobs, which are and always have been dumb, are supposed to be organized through a mailing list or message board and kept secret until the actual meeting happens. Publicizing an event like this eliminates the element of surprise which is the only reason for having an event like this. It's like planned spontaneity - it cannot happen.

if it isn't how do you expect people to actually act in concert, as a MOB? Telepathy?

    no, it is not.

    yes, it is.

Is it still a "flash mob" if it is heavily choreographed, with "REQUIRED" briefing meetings. I thought flash mobs were a bit more spontaneous and improvised.
