Air Traffic Controllers, Dikes of Holland at The Mohawk, Free
Image by Sandy Carson Okay, so by calling the free Thursday night lineup on The Mohawk's inside stage "intense," we misspoke. Intense doesn't adequately explain the aural assault of Homopolice, who declare: "We are a noise band, not some hippie space jam bullsh*t."
Update: Homopolice have canceled, but they'll be trying again at Emo's on Feb. 13. Second Hand God (featuring J.J. from the Teeners, Rusty from Total Abuse and Doug from Naw Dude) has graciously offered to fill in.
The Houston group's abrasive song structures don't bear much of a resemblance to Air Traffic Controllers, though the group's drummer, King Coffey, is a member of the seminal Butthole Surfers, a clear influence. Air Traffic Controllers have been a project of Gerard Cosloy's since 1995, when he paired up with drummer Claire Pannell to record improvisational music consisting of guitar and drums. Cosloy is now working with Coffey, and the two have been gigging around town intermittently, booking shows with The Distant Seconds, Magik Markers, and more. Also performing are the Dikes of Holland, who have, as of yet, uploaded no music on their MySpace page (but have secured a gig - nice job!). We're going to assume they won't be playing any hippie space jam bullshit, either.
