Listening to a live disc is often like hearing a football game on the radio. It’s really just a tease. You can hear the sounds and reactions and at times hear the enthusiasm of the crowd, but you can never get the full effect. Instead, it just makes you realize you’ve missed out. While you are listening to the album you could go down to the garage and pull out that old fog machine and strobe light you bought from Spencer’s before starting that band in 8th grade, but even that would probably wouldn’t get the mood just right. With the kind of music this French electro-pop duo puts out the live show is all about being a part of the atmosphere.
It takes a sizeable pair of cojones to put out a live electronic dance record. You lose out on the high production value that a studio recording provides and you will always fall short of your mark trying to communicate the vibe of the performance without actually being able to see the denizens of dancing fans, pulsating lights and illuminated cross that’s become their signature.
That being said, the squealing fans throughout the recording of this San Francisco concert in March of 2008 really seemed to get into it. As the beats build, so do the screams and roar of the crowd. From fuzzy thump to crunch, speed up to slow down, slappy bass to keys, they succeeded in keeping everyone doused in electro-pop. As expected, the crowd got particularly riled during the catchy single “D.A.N.C.E.” and stayed that way for “D.A.N.C.E. Part II”. The group spent a large amount of set time on the singles, like “Phantom” and “Waters of Nazareth”. They even came back around for a little reprise action on both to leave the fans with a familiar taste in their mouths, which just fueled the fire and brought them to their knees shouting for an encore.
