Austin Show Preview: Corto Maltese at Club Deville

This New Year's was tough. Believe it or not, we were still hungover from NYE '07, coasting along in a Tomahawk haze, when-all of a sudden-we arrived at '09. Everything in between was merely expository filler. Suffice it to say, even with that momentous occasion behind us, we're still a bit disoriented, wandering around, nursing micheladas, looking for something to soothe our over-partied nerves. Then, along came a show that we knew we could trust. A show that wouldn't jangle us too hard, letting us down gently onto the downy breast of this fresh annum.

That show is this evening at Club DeVille, and will feature the lanky, angular pop of scene legends-in-waiting Corto Maltese, fresh off of a Best Song award from the Chronicle. It was only yesterday that we bobbed our heads to "Providence," wondering what those kids were up to. Sweetening the deal is the debonair The Great Nostalgic, chosen in the same Chron as a "band to watch." Not bad. The Authors open, proving that there is still compelling, punk sneaking around in this 'burg. Club Deville's outside stage has been growing on us since its debut. The drinks are reasonable and the sound is generally pretty darned good. This evening, we're sure, shall be no different, allowing us to drape our rattled, ravaged bodies on one of the random chairs and order a few concoctions to see us through to Monday.
