2009 Kick Ass Awards!

For 2009, Austinist has decided to become more socially active out there. Tossing our proverbial hat into the social ring. In the mix. Like salad. Like a spring salad mix. Like a mixed salad. Like a tossed salad.

That is correct: Austinist has decided to toss some salad in 2009. Jelly!

And to start down that path, we are co-sponsoring the 2009 edition of (Austinist's own) Spike Gillespie's Office Of Good Deeds' 6th (perhaps 5th, or even 7th - the history of such do-goodery is always sketchy) annual Kick Ass Awards this Friday at BookPeople (our co-sponsor). The idea is this: every day there are unsung heroes in Austin who do the work of a saint with little to no recognition.

Is that justice? No.

Is it fair? Oh who cares, we are out to recognize and reward over here!

So this is the injustice being addressed here: community recognition. Approximately 25 recipients of said recognition were selected from a mass of entrants, all sponsored by someone in the Austin community. As part of the awards proceedings, each recipient will be introduced and have their virtues extolled for the gathered crowd to admire and be inspired by. Then the Kick Ass Trophy will be awarded! Just like the one pictured! So sweet!

Southpaw Jones will be performing in the mix (but not tossing anything) to help up-tone the celebratory nature of the event. Free drinks! Come one, come all and bask in the glorious warmth that is community recognition!

It is also Spike Gillespie's birthday, so there will be free cake, cake, beer, soft drinks, water, and Zhi Tea for the partaking! Happy early birthday Spike!
