Music News & Notes: Pop Unknown, Baird on Bob, NYE & More
- Legendary folk singer and guitarist Richie Havens will be performing two shows in Austin on January 16th. For tickets and more information, visit One World Theatre's Web site.
- Austin's The Calm Blue Sea have announced a short east coast tour, kicking off January 2 at the Mohawk. They'll be supporting their self-titled album released earlier this year.
- We'll give you a detailed list of NYE happenings later, but we're making a note about Spider House's plans. They'll have the Strange Attractors, Toko-Ri Get High, International Waters and Wine & Revolution performing, as well as a handful of DJs concentrating on '50s, '60s and '70s music all night long. Bottles of champagne will be sold as well.
- Brace yourself for another busy year with Autobus Records and {{{Sunset}}}'s Bill Baird. He'll be releasing Loveshines II in February, and an album full of covers (Robert Wyatt, Woody Guthrie & Townes Van Zandt are honored) called Songs the Sound of Myself, As Written By Others.
- Local indie outfit Pop Unknown have confirmed some reunion shows in Austin, one of which is happening February 21 at Crash Gallery with Low Line Caller.
- Denton-based folk rock band Theater Fire have a new record called Matter and Light. Sample "Uncle Wayne" and look out for some Austin tour dates soon.
- Hayes Carll's Trouble in Mind has topped the Americana Music spin charts for 2008.
- White Denim's Exposion is one of New Yorker music guru Sasha Frere-Jones' favorite albums of 2008.
