Relative Space was inspired by and created specifically for the Hyde Park Theatre. Throughout the performance we were continually pleased and surprised by the ways in which Rosario and the cast used the space, proving that this show cannot nor should not be performed anywhere else but HPT. Using just about every nook and cranny on stage and in the seats, DA! uses this space in a more creative way than we have yet seen. The myriad and often comic dances all seemed in the spirit of exploration, celebration, and pure fun.
There are several pieces that connect across the evening—several pieces centering on park benches offer particularly charming bits of storytelling. Our personal favorite was the pas de trois of the troupe’s gentlemen. Oh, and did we mention that there is a really excellent live band on stage? The connective thread that unifies this show, the space, might not hold up further than the show’s playtime, so we congratulate DA! on gauging this appropriately.
Though this piece was primarily a work of dance, DA! Theatre Collective clearly has a lot to say about breaking down the invisible and arbitrary divisions in the performance spectrum. We look forward to their next endeavors.
