Le Diamant Brut: Evil Army & Watch Out For Rockets

EVIL ARMY

What’s the Deal: Metal, metal, metal. With images of skeletons wielding machine guns and menacing weapons, this trio – Rob Evil, Bones and Michael Murder – play that old fashioned metal that anyone missing the days of true thrash metal should really dive into. It’s fast, steady and unrelenting. Barely understandable vocals – except “Satan”, “kill” and “ blood of the innocent” – rake over top of speedy beats, constant distortion and the occasional squealing solo. Their last show in Austin was canceled, but before that they played with Jay Reatard who brought the metal group out on tour with him.

“Sgt Says Kill” is one of their more thrash-worthy songs. The lightning-fast pick work during the distorted chugs sounds like the short, quick bursts of machine gun fire. Then, before you know it, the two minutes are up and the song is finished. Ahhh, metal.

Something Interesting: Big fans of the old school, it doesn’t look like any of their recordings are available right now for order as CD. There is, however, a 7” called Under Attack available at Hells Headbangers. And, these guys are all really young.

WATCH OUT FOR ROCKETS

What’s the Deal: When trying to navigate the murky canals of this musically over populated city, your best bet for finding new local music is just arriving early to shows to catch the openers. From there, it’s a trickle-down. Before you know it, your musical knowledge his broadened and you’re an informed voice in the local music scene, and, who knows, you might just find the love of your life out there at a show lurking in bad lighting. Anyway, here’s one of those bands you should come early to see. Watch Out For Rockets is still in its early stages as a band, but the members have a fair amount of experience between them. They’re a local quirky pop group sometimes touching down in the Strawberry Fields of The Beatles with a thick, vibrant chorus. But, when they’re not bathing you in multi-layered harmonies, they’re charming listeners with lo-fi indie rock and distorted guitars. WOFR’s latest, the 17-song Let Me Levitate, has that genuine and organic home recording feel that you’ll hear plenty of garage rock groups trying to duplicate, often over-compensating and coming out more produced than if they’d left well enough alone.

“Time So Slow” and “Beard War” are both tracks of some weight and substance. The former is a marching tune with a stomping beat and a slightly creepy, weird vibe, while still maintaining that softer pop edge. There are plenty of “la la”s and “uh oh”s to go around. Actual foot stomps are used in “Beard War” for the beat while vocalist, Dave Jones, sings about that fashionable face accessory, and his voice echoes quite a bit reminiscent of Band of Horses.

Something Interesting: Jones also plays drums for the Murdocks. The two bands are playing together, along with Sleeping in the Aviary and The Little Gentlemen, at Trophy’s December 15th.
