What Would Tom Waits Do?
Sunday, Dec. 7
Salvage Vanguard Theatre ()
David Ohlerking Art Opening & Holiday Party, 6-9 pm
[info]

Join the good people at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre on December 7 for a very special evening of holiday celebration, art and - why not - Tom Waits' birthday. The event is an opening for local artist David Ohlerking, who will be moving to New Jersey soon afterward. A student of Alex Kanevsky, Ohlerking founded the Austin Figurative Gallery/Project with Chris Chappell in 2006. He'ss an atypical artist, especially in this town, working downtown in a stock brokerage firm and carrying around a GOP voter registration card. His heavily glazed work is abstract but completely dedicated to craft, portraying thick lines and forms with lots of color. Some pieces are particularly Klimt-like, straddling some dominion between grotesque and divine, but always devoted to the "relationship between the color, and transparent paint vs. not transparent paint." For more on Ohlerking, read this interview, conducted by Schliefkevision.

The rest of the evening promises to be pretty fun, too. The Box Spring Hogs (a Waits cover band) will be performing, there will be a cemetery polka, happy birthday black Jesus and more. Admission is free.
