Weekend Music Preview: The Eastern Sea, Tia Carrera, & more

Red 7 adds some variety to its usual punk and metal revelry on Friday when The Eastern Sea’s reflective lyricism and easy-on-the-ears instrumentation takes center stage, along with Fulton Read’s chirpy power-pop. The benefit show aims to raise money for fellow local band Old Coyote who had their gear stolen recently. The Eastern Sea dropped their new self-titled EP earlier this year; “The Menu” was featured on KUT 90.5 FM’s Texas Music Matters last month. (Watch a clip of The Eastern Sea’s performance at our pre-Fun Fest Local Music Is Sexy bash here.)

Fulton Read’s new EP Indivisualize, released last month, can be downloaded here for free. And fear not ye Red 7 faithful, for The Ends, The Open Casket, and Scrabble Robot power through sleazy, snotty punk-rock ditties on the other stage on Friday night.

The Music Gym and Lounge celebrates its new location in Austin with two parties this weekend -- RSVP here for Friday’s “Grand Opening Party” and here for Saturday afternoon’s Fundraiser for the Alliance for Fair Food. Per its MySpace page, “The Music Gym and Lounge is a cooperative music studio, lounge, and concert venue chain, featuring equipped, professional practice rooms with everything needed to record and rehearse: drum kits, amps, PA's, microphones, and Pro Tools LE production stations.”

Speaking of parties, surely you’ve attended one of the many, many Philips GoGear events in town of late. Well, the fun times are not over just yet -- Philips’ latest shindig is at Mint Nightclub (408 Congress Ave., 78701, behind Light Bar) on Saturday evening. RSVP on Do512 for free admission. Philips has been promoting its new GoGear product heavily over the last couple of months and the grand finale of the ongoing Austin adventures is set to take place at The Mohawk on the 13th of this month, with the winner of its Undiscovered Austin contest headlining. Until then, enjoy this Saturday’s “GoGear Silent Dance Party” kicking off at 9 p.m. with a silent disco on the roof where you can sample the GoGear. Local DJ Markus with a K, Austin’s own Zeale, and Chicago’s Hollywood Holt supply the beats and rhymes.

If you didn’t get your psych-metal fix this past Tuesday, then head over to Trophy’s on Saturday and catch a bludgeoning set from one of Austin’s perennially under-rated bands, Tia Carrera. Spearheaded by Jason Morales and complemented impeccably by the rhythm section comprised of Erik Conn and Andrew Duplantis, Tia Carrera has been churning out stoner-rock of the finest caliber in town for many a year. Unfortunately, official albums containing the sludgy metal goodness have been few and far between -- their last release was an untitled record released on Austin’s own Australian Cattle God Records in 2006. But the band has been kind enough to offer many of their jams for free on their website -- download ‘em here. Scorpion Child and A Few Nice Things get things rolling at the Trophy’s show on Saturday.

Birds Barbershop and PartyEnds present Man Fest 2008 on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Birds’ south location (2110 S. Lamar Blvd., 78704). Live music from Listener Project and The New Drugs (Huey Lewis and the News cover band) is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. but there will plenty of intriguing activities going on all afternoon to keep you entertained. International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame member Cliff Hill will be “chunking axes” and last year’s champion, Listener Project’s Dan Smith will defend his title by arm wrestling any challengers! The entire brouhaha is free and apparently the guest of honor is “Bigfoot.”

Hey Room 710, book more Tia Carrera shows!

Not to slight what you do have booked, which is also quite nice.

  • Room 710

Speaking of cover bands, on Friday 12.5 Room 710 hosts the Triptych of Metal tribute with Sad Wings, Drifter, and Capricorn U.S.A. (aka Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Motorhead).

    'Cause we rock hard.
