Preview: Hollywood Gossip EP Release Party @ Deville

Anyone who says they don't have fun in Austin is a liar. That's right, a liar. Or, maybe they just can't recognize it. Fun does tend to change shape and usually has no particular odor which one can use to follow it. It does, however, usually have a sure fire way of tracking it down. Just follow the people wearing smiles, laughing and generally having a good time. Those are the people who usually know where to find it. Or, you can just listen to us when we say, "THIS MUSIC IS FUN!"

So, if you're looking for something to get excited over with quivery knees and everything Hollywood Gossip is releasing their debut EP, You're So Quiet, Friday at DeVille. They do the indie-pop thing quite well with upbeat guitar jangles, a skipping beat, gleaming vocals and even a few horn blasts, all while staying on this side of a pop overdose. Certain songs, like "Bicycle", even sound a little like the Smoking Popes (could be the vocals). Be prepared for the possibility of a sing-along though. And, for some reason every band looks a little cooler playing against the rock cliff outside Deville. If you don't come for the Hollywood Gossip, then there's always the catchy pop ditties constructed by Built by Snow to lure you in. They have plenty of peppy, hooky electro-rock numbers with blips that could have been generated by a vintage video game console. The influence of groups like Devo and the Rentals is clear in their music that's geeky, fun and entirely catchy. Dead Black Hearts don't exactly fit the mold of the evening with a sound that's more bleak, atmospheric and thoughtful at times, but a little variety is a good thing. The beats of DJ Gmau will also be on hand to help widen the scope of the evening.
