What’s the Deal: Because one cannot survive on the rock alone, try Austin’s Happy Panjoma. The name can throw you for a loop, but it’s definitely worth a try. For some, it takes several doses of social lubricant to really get into electronic music, and if you’re one of those, then you might want to sit this one out.
You’ll find digital sounds, beats, crunches and all manner of industrial-flavored electronic delights in the sounds of Happy Panjoma. They have two albums available, Happy Panjoma and Happy Panjoma II (they saved all of their creative juices for the songs, not the titles). Some of the tracks have vocals on top of the beats, but one of the most notable tracks, “Immediacy”, does not. It’s full of late night dance partyisms that can make an impact on all those capable of losing themselves in a groove. They’re playing Elysium later this month, and something called Thunder of Gods Festival in Dripping Springs later next year. The fest features bands like Impaler, Helstar, Putrid Pile and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult.
Something Interesting: If you’re tired of going the conventional MySpace route to check out new music, you can hear Happy Panjoma and several other Austin bands on the River Runs Red podcast on BreakThru Radio, hosted by Mainstream Adi (it’s not a self-designated title, so be careful calling him that to his face).
Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “Disco Killer”
What’s the Deal: Maybe it’s the sentimentality of the season, or the smells of logs burning in fireplaces, or the way the chilly air makes everything a little sharper, or maybe it’s all the lights on the neighbors house across the way (which have been up for at least a month already), but there’s just something about this time of the year that makes peoples knees go all rubbery. But, what do you do when your Bing Crosby and Phil Spector Christmas CDs get a little tired (I know, probably not going to happen)?
Well, the good people in Gentlemen Auction House are doing their part to pump some brand new holiday sounds out into the airwaves, and they aren’t half bad. Songs like “Home for the Holidays” off their brand new Christmas EP, Christmas in Love, are actually really good, which is often a rarity with newer X-mas recordings. Decorated with sleigh bells, male and female harmonies, keys, a little trumpet, and a heaping portion of indie pop holiday cheer, this track as well as many which follow show that the sounds of the holidays don’t necessarily have to be rooted in nostalgia – they can be new and fresh as well.
Something Interesting: They have other, non-holiday albums as well, which are equally refreshing. You can get a taste real soon, December 9th, when they play Lambert’s.
Other Tracks Worth Checking Out: “On the Rooftop” and “Call it Casual”
