The Golden Animals @ Beerland Tonight

For one reason or another, The Golden Animals journeyed to the sweltering southern California desert to write their first full-length piece, Free Your Mind and Win a Pony. By escaping the tribulations of city life, they hoped to discover some of nature’s best-kept secrets. Now that they’ve reached the gold at the end of the mythical (and most likely hallucinogen-filled) rainbow, they’re on tour and making a stop at Beerland tonight.

The sultry duo present a potluck of blues, folk and funk. Punctuated melodies surround alarming riffs in the contagious hit, “The Steady Roller,” while “Follow Me Down” strikes a balance of tender chord progressions and sparkling rhythm. With vocals similar to the Silver Jews, the luminescent pair is sure to keep the Beerland crowd bouncing along to mysterious beats and constant tempo changes. Balancing out the night will be performances from The Tunnels, a sleepy psych garage rock bunch, and All In The Golden Afternoon, an edgy experimental group. The chaotic turpitude of new-age music will undoubtedly shower rainbows of whimsy for those willing to experiment.
