Weekend Music Preview: Mo Town Party @ The Mo Hawk

Australian non-profit organization The Movember Foundation believes that men just don’t take care of their health well enough and has initiated an annual event (“Movember”) each November around the world to raise awareness about prostate cancer. The entity was founded in 2004 and has since raised almost US $30 million all over the world. In the U.S., Movember has teamed up with Prostate Cancer Foundation to educate the masses. As per Movember’s U.S. website, “Men lack awareness about the very real health issues they face. Many feel they have to be tough - "a real man" - and are reluctant to see a doctor about an illness or to go for regular medical check ups. The aim of Movember is to change these attitudes and make men's health fun by putting the Mo back on the face of American men while raising some serious funds for the number one men's health issue, prostate cancer.”

What can you do? “At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo (Australian slang for moustache), raising money and awareness along the way for men's health and the fight against prostate cancer. Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés.” Register here, watch the November 2008 video here, and finally, come down to The Mohawk this evening for a very special event entitled the Mo Town Party -- details after the jump.

For a measly and well justified $10 (tickets), show your support for the cause and enjoy live music from The Steps, You Make Engine, Spectre in the Cab, and The Sandworms. PopNoir and Premode will spin the beats this evening and there will be an open bar between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. courtesy of Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Sweet Leaf Tea.

But that’s not all -- Movember has teamed up with Playboy -- models Kelly Hargraves and Kristy Dwyer will be in attendance at The Mohawk tonight! Mortal attendees can sign up to win two tickets to Playboy’s annual SXSW “Rock The Rabbit” shindig in town and also for a chance to win a Epiphone Dot from Gibson. Additional prizes from Texas business’ like Emo’s, Alamo Drafthouse, Amy’s Ice Cream, Bird’s Barbershop, and Freebirds World Burrito will be up for grabs as well for the lucky ones. Movember is doing its bit to educate everyone about the medical conditions facing men today. Join in on this worthy cause tonight at The Mohawk. It’s almost Christmas time and it’s never too soon to do your good deed to make Santa’s list.

Also on Friday, Progress Coffee wraps up its November Residency with another set by local experimental-folk wizards The Weird Weeds; Dark Inside the Sun and Followed By Static support this evening. -- This show is now taking place at Okay Mountain (1312 E. Cesar Chavez, Ste. B, 78702).

Shed some of that turkey ‘n’ stuffing in your tummy on Saturday at Lamberts -- Afrofreque presents Freque-A-Thon, an inevitable dance party featuring plenty of pulsating funk, soul, and hip hop concoctions thanks to Bigface, Starlynx, Super Sonic Soul Squad, and of course, Afrofreque.
