Le Diamant Brut: Torche & The Unbearables
What’s the Deal: Images of bears, rhinos, dinosaurs and even monsters with generous genitalia adorn the band’s t-shirt catalog, and they’re friends with groups like Mastodon, Mogwai, Kylesa and Municipal Waste on their MySpace page. And, their newest full-length is called Meaderthal, so, judging from that information alone, you should be able to make a pretty accurate judgment as to whether or not this is a band you can rock out to. They’ve been called stoner metal, although according to rumor they don’t consider themselves a metal band, which is actually a really good idea because these days genre lines are becoming so blurred that they really aren’t that accurate. Regardless, there is an abundance of chugs, powerful distortion and heavy thuds from the drum pit in their music. But, they still have a melodic vocal presence which doesn’t necessary adhere to the typical metallic structure, and they sometimes go off on somewhat psychedelic tangents.
“Healer” begins with a good solid, powerful guitar riff with distorted fuzz surrounding higher-pitched notes that push on through the entire 2-minute song (the perfect length) It does throw you for a loop, however, when the vocals kick in and sound a little like old Pennywise. But, their live show is where it’s at. So, if you can’t make it to Sheffield, Oxford or London in the next week or so, then you should definitely carve a reminder into your Trapper Keeper right next to the drawing of the skull and lightning bolt to catch them next time they come around.
Something Interesting: They were in town about a week ago playing a late show at Red 7, and by all reports it was a great show that lived up to the reputation they’ve been steadily building.

What’s the Deal: Sounds like a garage rock band, right? Or, some kind of aggravating band of superheroes, perhaps with powers that aren't really for the benefit of mankind but just to annoy their foes, like the power to tell really, really boring stories about their vacation to Florida. Maybe another member just drives slow and changes lanes without checking to see if there is anyone already occupying said space. But fortunately, they are a group of about nine or so living in Austin and making some of the most agreeable and entertaining orchestral pop around. They use the farfisa, moog, flute, sax, and other complementary instruments to accent the already existent rock elements to create a thick blanket of sound to back songs about zombies on the hunt for human flesh and conceptual tunes portraying the cycle of life.
“Zombies Unite” is one of the songs that immediately catch an ear while trolling through their catalog. It must be from the score they created for the Austin produced play “Bitten!: a Zombie Rock Odyssey”. It starts with an angelic chorus of “People, people, we’re gonna eat ‘em,” and then jumps into Polyphonic Spree type bliss, plus a shrieking guitar and a steady beat.
Something Interesting: The Danish dig The Unbearables. Denmark’s Soundvenue magazine has a top five songs of the week, and The Unbearables’ “The Darker Part” recently made it onto the list.
