No, Austin Playhouse hasn't trained a particularly intelligent canine in the fine art of method acting, but they have cast the incredibly cute, undeniably animalistic Andrea Osborn as Sylvia, who pads about the stage in a pair of red Converse. Her beloved savior, the mid-life crisis-ridden Greg, is played with love by David Stahl, while Bernadette Nason is appropriately tortured as Kate, a wife who finally wants a dog-free, child-free, grown-up life.
Kate and Greg spend the play in a kind of affectionately tough negotiation over the terms of the Sylvia situation, pushing and pulling on corresponding heartstrings while Sylvia suffers the typical doggie downers: life with cats, getting spayed, the delicate process of flea eradication.
Feminists in the crowd will probably (and rightly) cringe at yet another wife-caves-in-to-hubby theme, and the initial attraction between Greg and Sylvia the human-dog might remind a few audience members of some select Savage Love columns, but the creep factor decreases swiftly. Besides, gender-bending Zach Thompson steals the show, so look out for some good, old-fashioned men-in-tights action, too.

Went to this show this weekend with no expectations and was very pleasantly surprised. A great cast brings this simultaneously unbelievable and completely realistic scenario to life.
Highly recommended!
