But before the polls and the computer algorithms and the recriminations can be considered, the Longhorns (10-1 Overall / 6-1 Big 12) have a game to play (and win). Texas is heavily favored in a Thanksgiving night matchup with Texas A&M (7 pm, ESPN), but as Aggie fans are quick to point out, their team has beaten the Longhorns two years in a row.
Texas A&M (4-7 overall / 2-5 Big 12) has struggled in its first year under coach Mike Sherman, who turned over the offense to sophomore quarterback Jerrod Johnson. The offensive line hasn't given Johnson a lot of time to operate this season, however, giving up 32 sacks (nearly 3 per game).
Longhorn fans are worried that a win over the Aggies may not be enough for Texas to hold on to their #2 ranking and national championship game berth. Oklahoma pulled to within .0084 points behind Texas (.9209 to .9125) in the latest BCS rankings following the Sooners' blowout victory over then second-ranked Texas Tech. With the Longhorns playing an unranked opponent this week and the Sooners playing at #12 Oklahoma State, Texas supporters are worried that an OU victory would vault the Sooners over the Longhorns into the coveted #2 spot, even though Texas defeated Oklahoma head-to-head earlier in the season.
The concern is so great that some fans have begun a Facebook group, "Texas did beat OU 45-35, lest we forget." to help influence national media and coaches who vote in the national rankings.
NOTES
- Texas led the Big 12 Conference with 22 selections on the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team. It was the first straight year the Longhorns put more players on the team than any other. This year's group included 22 first-team selections (3.20 or better GPA) and five second-team selections (3.00 to 3.19 GPA). In addition, senior Chris Ogbonnaya was named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
- Quarterback Colt McCoy was selected as a finalist for two prestigious post-season awards. McCoy joined Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow as finalists for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the collegiate player of the year. He also is in the final group for the Davey O'Brien Award, honoring the nation's top quarterback. Harrell and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford are also up for the award.
