Preview: Nada Surf with Delta Spirit and Jealous Girlfriends

With an ever growing sea of additions to the enormity that is the indie genre, it’s hard to stand out in the cloudy mess. Nada Surf may still be trying to find its place in the sun, but there’s sure to be a line of angst-hungry fans ready join them for the journey Saturday night at Emo’s.

The group has come a long way since the topsy turvy alt rock days of High/Low, which boasts the TRL hit, “Popular,” — a sarcastic lining of Nirvana-esque phrases with a sprinkling of spoken word punches. Later came the Pixies-like sauntering of The Weight is a Gift and Let Go. This year we were introduced to the fifth album, Lucky, which branched out ever so slightly from their typical indie pop-cornyness. The star of this record, “See These Bones,” brings breaths of Ben Gibbard vocals alongside a chanting chorus that relays from delicate orchestration scarily similar to Manchester Orchestra. Oh, and we forgot to make the all-too-easy Weezer comparison. Note: they sound kinda like Weezer, too. But hey, what band in this day and age doesn’t face comparisons and questions of originality? If anything, Nada Surf represent a trail mix of the strong points of many bands.

Opening up will be the ”soul searchin’ people” of Delta Spirit, a flowery San Diego outfit that mirrors the southern rock of Cold War Kids. Jealous Girlfriends, a charming quad from Brooklyn, will also be there with an experimental firehouse of love songs. With a lineup like this, we promise you’ll be humming some catchy hooks on the way out.
