We had the chance this week to email with Henry, during which we discussed having Texas ties, conceiving art on the back of receipts and happy accidents, all of which you can delve into more deeply at the S!A! Studios, which are located at 301-A Chicon St (#32b on the E.A.S.T. map).
First off, we know that you work in several different mediums, including screen printing, line drawing, photography and acrylic paint. What should we expect to see from you during E.A.S.T.?
All of the above and a few new directions as well. I've gotten into Max Ernst lately and in effect have produced a good deal of collages. I also have worked with my friend Brandy on an installation piece for E.A.S.T., that includes soundscapes, three-dimensional objects and vinyl paintings.
What is your affiliation with Super! Alright! Studio?
Some of the first projects S!A! worked on were for Single Frame, a band I was in. This was a while back and since then I've worked with S!A! on various projects, etc. Basically, we're friends who help each other out and scheme things. The S!A! guys are really onto some amazing things lately!
Could you explain your creative process?
I try to stay open to different ideas and processes. Therefore I don't really have a defined process. However, most ideas, images and subjects are preconceived before I start production, usually starting in my sketch book or on the back of a receipt, etc.
Your site adreonhenry.com says that you work in cyclic variety. What cycle would you consider yourself to be in now?
Lately I've been up to one-line drawings and other forms of minimalist art. The other day I rode my bike around and took pictures of tires and rims on autos. I've really been into fancy rims lately. You can tell a lot about a person based on their rims or hubcaps.
We understand that you grew up in Bryan, TX. How does your childhood inform your approach to art?
Fortunately, I had opportunities to travel so I can't say that I feel like I'm from Bryan. However, I do feel ties to Texas -- especially west Texas. I think most things that have affected my artwork or mindset have been experiences that could have occurred in any rural area in the south.
We know that choosing your favorite piece/project is like a parent picking a favorite child, but of your work, what has been your personal favorite? Or perhaps you have a most reviled piece/art making experience you would like to tell us about?
You can tell a lot about a person based on their rims or hubcaps.
I tend to be drawn to the "happy accidents" or pieces that are the first of a certain technique or process.
I used to have a studio space that would always flood when it rained. Once I had a show coming up and had been producing like crazy -- I had unstretched paintings everywhere -- on the couch, under the table, hanging from the ceiling -- I mean I was in a painting frenzy. Finally I passed out and during my slumber there came a storm. When I walked into the space the paintings that were on the floor were actually floating in about 2.5" of water. Fortunately they were all vinyl pieces. I gained a few techniques out of the deal realizing that water can be used in ways not usually considered in tradition production of art. Heh.
What are your expectations for this year's E.A.S.T.?
To have a good time and to meet as many people as possible. This is a great event because you have the opportunity to meet so many different people that are genuinely interested in art and the art scene in Austin.
If you could only check out one other artists work during E.A.S.T. who would it be and why?
Geez. This is a really tough question! There are so many interesting things going on in Austin right now that it is impossible for me to narrow it down. This is going to be a great tour, with most artist in anticipation. So, you really can't go wrong. I suggest a bike ride with friends from studio to studio!
What's up next for you?
I have a booth at the Blue Genie Art Bazaar, which opens December 4th. After Blue Genie I am going to shift into proposal mode for shows in 2009, both locally and nationally. Also, I have a music project that I'm working on with my friend Gates... I am really wanting to go to Cadillac Ranch or head to Marfa soon, so there has been talk of a road trip...
Thanks for chatting with us via the magical world of email, Adreon! And just for the record, Austinist loves a good road trip, you know, in case you're looking for driving buddies.

The Austinist should consider getting serious about covering contemporary art.
