Show Preview: Future Clouds & Radar, Leather Bag, and Friends @ Mohawk

Future Clouds and Radar are so into it. It's not difficult to tell when a group is phoning it in, but with these peeps there's never any danger. They're filled with the incredible shining power of music, and they're looking for mountaintops to shout it off of. As such, their albums reflect this. The most recent, Peoria could easily one of the best local releases of 2008, filled to overflowing with their lanky, damn-the-torpedoes melodies and a smorgasbord of unique tone and timbre, all elements firmly planted in the fertile soil of pop-rock at its most pungent and nutrient-rich. They're also one of the most industrious and devoted bands in the Austin scene, rocking whenever and wherever they can, so if you haven't heard them yet you probably need to get out more often. Tonight, at Mohawk you'll get a chance.

We recommend that you arrive a little before the buzzer to catch Leatherbag, another local gem who deserve all the traction they seem to be gaining. Hit up their Myspace, listen to "It's Over, " and try not to fall in love. With a little bit of The Walkmen and a touch of The Velvet Underground, these rough-and-tumblers will go far. Sally Crewes & The Sudden Moves and Ethan Azarian open.

I know that I'm nitpicking but it's Sally Crewe, not Crewes. There's also a much more current Future Clouds and Radar band photo on their MySpace page (at least in regards to the lineup on the latest record).

Too bad there was such a poor turnout last night. It was a great all-around local show. Of course, I love FCR but Leatherbag were also particularly fantastic :-).
