You should be able to follow your nose to the Brightblack Morning Light show this evening at Mohawk. Although it is - of course - illegal to smoke the nanny-nanny-hay-hay in public, we can guarantee you that more than a handful of beans will be baked during this set, beginning with the ones onstage. BML's music, like so many of their influences and predecessors', really does lend itself well to the consumption of drugs. It's hard to not desire chemical enhancement once you're exposed to their gauzy textures, hippie-dippie-doo song titles, and lackadaisical execution. Say what you will about them, though: it's calming. The soundtrack to bong rips, road trips to folk festivals, and camping excursions on mesas.

Tonight, you'll be able to get close enough to founders Rachael Hughes and Nathan Shineywater to fondle the leather tassels on their ponchos and stroke the tops of their moccasins, if you're so inclined. Or you can simply drift from side to side and absorb the music, maaaaan. "Discovered" by bonafide indie-rock Jesus Will Oldham a few years back and eventually finding their way onto the roster at Matador Records, BML's psychedelic folk has gone over as well as a tray full of special brownies at a Star Wars marathon in 78704. Which is to say: critics and fans alike have asked for extra gooey seconds of the breathy vocals and soul-tinged noodling from their last, eponymous, album. Pad over to the Mo' on this sure-to-be beautiful autumn Thursday evening and feel alright with the rest of those crazy, neo-hippies. And be sure and try the brownies... they're far out.
