We recently enjoyed another ACL Fest and this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest is a few days away but there is another music festival in Tejas this weekend -- the 2008 SPI Music Fest kicks off in South Padre today, with performances by the likes of Willie Nelson, Ghostland Observatory, Blue Öyster Cult, Alejandro Escovedo and Grupo Fantasma included at this imminent three day party. However, if you have no intention of leaving Austin, fret not, for our city is a nice little oasis of music this weekend as well -- carefully examine the “Halloween Special” Austinist Weekend Music Preview Slideshow above for details on many events in town over the course of Halloween weekend. Follow the jump to learn more about some of our choice picks but before you do, fill out the form below for a chance to win two tickets to see The Australian Pink Floyd Show at Austin Music Hall on Friday night.
If you can't view the Flash slideshow above, an alternate version appears after the jump.
The Mohawk’s Halloween celebration on Friday is not to be missed. Live music from Jeffrey Lewis & The Jackals, Masonic, and Bear Claw keeps downstairs occupied while PopNoir brings the party to The Green Room upstairs. But that’s not all -- a plethora of fun activities like “smashing pumpkins on the roof,” “bobbing for beers,” and “zombie toss” should keep everyone amused. The venue also offers up a special Absinthe concoction on Friday to entice you to attend. On Saturday, The Mohawk hosts the third annual Rock y Roll Dia bash.
Room 710, reliably, brings us a couple of stellar shows this weekend. Children In Heat (The Misfits tribute), Pickled Punks (Demented Are Go tribute), and Big Mess (Devo tribute) provide the entertainment at “Ghouls Night Out III” on Friday night. And be sure to check out the “Invincible Czars Dance with the Day of the Dead” show at Room 710 on Saturday.
Project Transitions is doing its bit to educate locals about AIDS and HIV; the entity presents the “Living City Benefit Concert” at Club de Ville on Saturday featuring live music from The Black and White Years, Corto Maltese, Zest of Yore and Amy Cook. All proceeds benefit Project Transitions’ hospice and housing programs for Central Texans living with AIDS/HIV.
Learning Secrets, fresh from a gig up in New York City last weekend, returns in town just in time for a special show at Beauty Bar on Saturday. The schedule for this “Classic Edition” Day of the Dead party boasts live music from Many Birthdays and Grassfight, and of course Ian Orth in the DJ booth with ample assistance this evening from Voxtrot’s Ramesh Srivastava. Dress up as a skeleton or put on some skull face paint and get in for a measly $1! (You can listen to the new Learning Secrets mix here.)Opposite Day presents its annual “Unlike A Virgin” show on Saturday, November 1st at Jovita’s. Pat Kennedy (boasting a Master’s degree in Performance from UT), Greg Yancey (a “bass builder and player” -- Yancey Basses), and Sam Arnold (vocalist and guitarist) comprise Opposite Day -- the band formed in 2001 and duly tagged itself as “Educational Art-Rock for Animals.” Three full-lengths have followed since, with two more albums in the works concurrently. Opposite Day’s music runs the gamut in terms of genres; the band members’ expertise and versatility will be on full display when it interprets the outstanding Madonna compilation from 1990, The Immaculate Collection, track for track, song by song. You can get a taste of what to expect here.
