The 411: There's wraps, panini, even pizza, but the real draw for Cafe de Bella are the bành mí.

Asian-French culinary fusion is arguably one of the twentieth century's finest achievements—particularly when it comes in the form of the humble bành mí, a Vietnamese sandwich that's become increasingly popular and widely available in Austin over the last few years. French-style bread filled with Vietnamese-flavored ingredients, bành mí generally consists of some form of meat, shredded carrots, cilantro, cucumber, and other vegetables on a baguette. At its best, it's a cheap, satisfying, flavorful meal.

And Cafe de Bella's bành mí are definitely well up there (and very welcome to those up north who may not be able to make it down to Lulu B's for their lunch hour). This sandwich shop and bakery, located near the Target at Anderson Square and 183, is new enough to still be finding its balance—and also for the first question from the cashier to be "Is this your first time here?"—but it's off to a good start.

The bành mí at Cafe de Bella are offered with a variety of fillings—barbecued shrimp, barbecued chicken, vegetarian "ham"—but the barbecued pork comes most highly recommended, as it's filled with savory, flavorful chunks of pork offset by crisp, fresh vegetables. (Be careful of the jalapeño slices; the heat they add to the sandwich is more than welcome, but they can surprise you.) If you're really feeling indulgent, try the "Gourmet Sandwich," which includes paté, a French-style cured ham called jambon, a couple of different kinds of cured pork, and peppered ham. For all that, it's not nearly as overwhelming as you might think, and it's delicious, bringing a marvelous array of pork flavor with each bite.

Though the bành mí are the real standout at Cafe de Bella, the egg rolls are also worth note; stuffed with ground pork and vegetables, these are hearty and perfectly crisp. Spring rolls are also on offer, as are Vietnamese rice crepes filled with pork and served with the house-made sweet and sharp fish sauce. For fans of the Vietnamese vermicelli bowls, those are also available, topped with your choice of barbecued pork, shrimp, chicken, and chay, the vegetarian "ham" mentioned earlier. The dish at Cafe de Bella is really more of a salad, with cold rice noodles that are a bit more spaghetti-like in texture than those that you see at other Vietnamese restaurants around town. It's very good, and yet another chance to sample their excellent pork, but it's not quite the standout that the sandwiches are.

Cafe de Bella carries a wide range of beverages, including the classic cà phê sua dá (Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk), lots of fresh-squeezed juices (ranging from orange to sugarcane), and a variety of smoothies, including durian. There are also a number of pastries regularly in the case, including cakes and a number of sweet and savory buns.

The rest of Cafe de Bella's menu will have to wait for another trip and follow-up. It features wraps, bagel sandwiches, American-style sandwiches (ham, chicken, turkey, or roast beef), panini, and even pizzas. If the Vietnamese dishes are any indication, all of these are probably good. But with the bành mí sandwiches as good as they are, it almost seems like a shame to order anything else.

I'll second that endorsement of Tam Deli's bahn mi.

I don't usually make it my goal in life to eat grilled pork but I always make an exception there.

Pho Van is by far my favorite Pho and Bahn Mi in the city. I think they put an addictive substance in their food that makes me crave it fortnightly. And I love that the woman who works there is so predictable and efficient - "Hi hi hi hi hi, you ready to order? Small #1? Something to drink?" - all in one breath.

That being said, I am looking forward to trying Cafe de Bella. Perhaps for lunch today.....

Also don't forget Tam Deli up north, one of the first places in Austin to serve banh mi, I believe.

also in Chinatown Center: Lily Sandwich is awesome!

@figment: Thanks for the tips. Maybe we'll do a Austin-wide banh mi survey for a feature sometime.

There are lots of great Vietnamese sandwich options up north already - Lulu B's is hardly the end-all, be-all of Bahn Mi in Austin, even if they are the most expensive.

Try Pho Van in the same Target Shopping Center, or my favorite, Thahn Nhi on North Lamar about a mile from there. There are at least three other Bahn Mi places on North Lamar between 183 and Braker.

Campus needs some Bahn Mi love though, those cheap sandwiches would be a big hit with students bored to death of Subway. Anybody know of any?

Yay! We have Vietnamese sandwiches up north! Thanks for this review. It's a spot I might have otherwise overlooked.
